Here’s our list of 23 fantastic picture books based on true stories to inspire kids!
If you’ve been around this site at all you know our biggest weakness. In case you’re new, it’s books. We love big ones, small ones, old, new, picture, board, coffee table…you name it, we just love books.

It’s not without reason though, one of the biggest reasons we feel it’s important to have so many books around is so we can immerse our kids in a world of books. They are in stacks, on shelves, and on the table, counter, and dresser…and I love it that way.
In a technology driven culture, I am determined not to lose my children to screens. So I choose to give them something else to look at.
Books.
Lately, I’ve been trying to find more kids books based on true stories. I want to expand their world and inspire them with real stories to show what is really possible. Today I’m sharing some of the new ones we’ve found. There are so many fantastic picture books based on real events (or mostly real events!). This collection is just the beginning or jumping off point.
The age appropriateness of these varies…check out the links for specific age recommendations if you are concerned or curious! Some of these my 5 year-old loves, others are more my almost 11 year-old’s speed. Either way, these are great to just read for fun or to incorporate in your home-school.

Ok, just have to comment, Mailing May is such a great book and one of my favorites. It’s about a girl that gets “mailed” (back in a day when such things were still possible) so she can go visit someone. I love the whimsy and innocence of this book! And to think, it’s based on a true story!
What are your favorite true story picture books? I’d love to read them (and my kids would too)! Please leave a comment below and let me know!
