Affiliates
Affiliates are companies who offer you a portion of a sale in exchange for referring someone to their site. Affiliate opportunities are almost endless on the web these days. What company doesn’t want to get the word out about their products? It only makes sense that they are willing to part with a percentage of their sales in order to sell more.
Some examples would be:
Amazon
Amazon allows bloggers to put any product they sell on their blog. If someone clicks on that link and makes a purchase. The blogger gets a percentage of that sale.
For example: Here is a link for my all time favorite laundry soap; Charlies-Soap-Friendly-Laundry-Powder If you clicked on it and made a purchase, I’d get a small percentage of the sale price back from Amazon. It’s important to note that affiliates don’t cost the buyer any extra. This is the key to their success! Its an amazing way to generate revenue and help people at the same time.
By the way, affiliate links can also be pictures you click on like the one below for a DVD set:
Just like a text link, if a customer makes a purchase, a blogger will receive a small percentage of the sale price.
Awesome Online Courses
There are some amazing courses available online nowadays. From the comfort of your own home you can learn skills that can radically change your life. A lot of times bloggers get the opportunity to share some of these courses with their readers by becoming an affiliate. They once again earn a percentage of the sale for referring people. It’s another win, win opportunity. The reader gets knows they are getting a quality course because they have grown to trust the advice of the blogger. The blogger earns a commission on the course (at no extra cost to the buyer) which helps them earn money and supports their blog.
An example would be:
Make Over Your Mornings from Crystal Paine. Crystal designed an awesome 14 day course that takes you step-by-step through how to create routines that can revolutionize your mornings and get your day off to a great start!
Affiliate ads
Some websites like Share-a-Sale allow bloggers to place company ads on their site. It works just like the other affiliates I mentioned. Buyer clicks through and purchases, blogger receives a small percentage of each sale at no extra cost to buyer.
Example:
If you check out my home page you’ll see different ads (from different sources). But if you look for an ad that says ” Chelsea Green Publishing” you’ll see a good example of an affiliate ad.
Advertisements
By running a someone’s ads on your site, you collect revenue based on the amount of traffic that sees it and also based on the amount of clicks those ads receive. There are many, many companies that will put ads on websites.
In my opinion, the easiest one to get is google ads. There requirements are quite easy to meet and set-up is really straight forward.
There are companies who offer much higher payouts, but most will have higher requirements to match (i.e. higher traffic).
Example:
Once again if you look at my home page you will see ads that change periodically. these are most likely the type of ads we are talking about.
Sponsored Posts
A company will sometimes pay a blogger to write about their product. Income is generally a one time payment, but the range of payment is huge. It is mostly dependent on who you are (how popular your blog is) and your range of influence (how many page-views of sessions you get). Some bloggers just receive a free product for their time other get actual money. I’ve heard of people getting $50 per post and I have heard of $2500-$3000 being a blogger base range for sponsored posts.
Coaching
Often times bloggers hire themselves out to coach on topics that fit their expertise. This can usually be done via phone, email or skype. Offering a coaching service is a way for bloggers to diversify their income streams. Also, coaching offers a pretty stable and predictable source of income.
Example:
A blogger that focuses on getting people out of debt may offer personal coaching where they call and talk a reader through writing out a detailed budget or offer advise on how to change their personal finances around.
Personal Products
One of the best way to generate an income blogging is to sell a product. It could be digital or physical, It could be anything, but a blog is an awesome way to get the word out about the products you have. Oftentimes bloggers offer ebooks or courses for sale.
So that’s a quick run-down of how bloggers can make money. Here’s a common reaction: “But I thought people made money on social media. I’ve heard people say that they make their living on Pinterest.” Well, yes and no. Social media has rocked the world of bloggers. It has changed the way that people can be reached and opened up endless marketing options. The truth is that a social media site like Pinterest is a way for bloggers to share their best work through pins. When people click on those pins it brings traffic (and hence revenue) to the blogger’s website.
I hope that helps you understand how bloggers make money. These are just a few examples. As the blogging world grows so do the opportunities. The options are endless. Its a fun world to be a part of, but it takes a lot of work to generate sales and income.
